Burnley could see themselves shooting up to the top half of the table if they manage to snatch a victory at home from a Jordan Pickford-less Sunderland on Saturday. The 22 year old shot-stopper has been a revelation for the Black Cats this season and claimed the team’s number one goalkeeping position with his consistent performances. Pickford suffered a blow to his knee against Manchester United on Boxing Day which could keep him sidelined for six to eight weeks. Pickford was a key component in Sunderland’s relegation battle and his absence could affect the team’s morale profoundly. Despite the 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford, Sunderland are still 18th in the standings and are two points away from safety.

Burnley are relying on their stellar home form to extend their stay in the Premier League. Burnley have won six of their 10 home matches, losing three and drawing one.  Andre Gray scored his first goal in 10 matches on Boxing Day to ensure a much needed win for their top-flight survival. Gray’s goal was also the first goal Burnley had scored on a Boxing Day in the last four years, bringing an end to another dreadful goal drought.

TEAM NEWS

  • Burnley

Dean Marney might be available for selection before the game as he recovers from a knock he suffered against Manchester City. Jeff Hendrick will serve a one match suspension for picking up his fifth yellow against Middlesbrough.

Doubt: Dean Marney(knock)

Suspension: Jeff Hendrick(1 match)

  • Sunderland

Pickford’s injury would bring back Vito Mannone in the squad. Mannone was the first choice keeper for Sunderland before he was out for three months with an elbow injury. This would be the first time Mannone picks up the gloves as Pickford’s outstanding form restricted him to the bench. Javier Manquillo(knee), Steven Pienaar(knock) and Duncan Watmore(knee) are close to return.

Injuries: Jordan Pickford(knee), Patrick McNair(knee), Jan Kirchhoff(knee), Lynden Gooch(ankle), Lee Cattermole(hip)

Doubts: Javier Manquillo(knee), Steven Pienaar(knock), Duncan Watmore(knee), Jack Rodwell(hamstring)

PREDICTION

Burnley’s impressive home run, which saw them win four out of their last five matches, prompts us to declare the Clarets as clear favorites against a worn out Sunderland side.
