Arsenal v Basel Tips
Swiss champions Basel travel to North London on Wednesday night to play Arsenal as both teams look to kickstart their Champions League campaigns after two opening day draws.
Arsenal vs Basel Betting tips
Over 3.5 goals 11/8 – This is a tempting bet such is Arsenal’s current goal scoring form – eleven goals in their past three games – and Basel’s goal scoring threat is considerable too with Seydou Dombia, Marc Janko, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Andraz Sporar included in their ranks.
Seydou Dombia anytime goalscorer 10/3 – the Ivorian international has netted five goals in six games since moving to the Swiss club on loan, and has form in this competition – he has hit 25 goals in 36 appearances in European competition, all but two of which came with CSKA Moscow. These odds look favourable, especially as he is the side’s penalty taker and could exploit an Arsenal defence which is often vulnerable.
Football tips: Recent form
After an alarming start to the season in terms of lack of signings, injuries and shipping four goals at home to Liverpool, Arsenal have quickly recovered and clicked into form. Four league wins in succession with a 3-0 thrashing of Chelsea the most recent and convincing. An opening day Champions League draw in Paris was an impressive result if not performance.
Basel have won their previous eleven domestic matches across all competitions which is an impressive run of form even for their dominance over Swiss football, and have nine wins from nine in the Swiss Super League. They opened their Champions League game with a disappointing home draw against Bulgarian side Ludogorets – who they shared a group with two seasons ago, along with Liverpool and Real Madrid. Swiss international Renato Steffen levelled the tie with ten minutes to go to earn Urs Fischer’s side a point.
Wednesday’s clash will be the first ever meeting between the two sides, and could see Granit Xhaka of Arsenal come up against his brother Taulant, who plays for Basel.
Basel have an excellent record against English clubs in the recent past in this competition, having previously progressed in groups which have dismissed Liverpool (twice) and Manchester United.
Predictions: Team news
Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud will miss the match through suspension after being sent off against PSG in the closing moments, while Danny Welbeck, Aaron Ramsey, Carl Jenkinson and Per Mertesacker remain unavailable through injury.
