Both of these teams come into this match on a high, but for different reasons. Although Leicester’s league form has been mixed so far this season, they come into this game after a memorable 1-0 Champions League win over Porto on Tuesday night. Southampton, meanwhile, have recovered from their slow start to the season to win four matches in a row in all competitions – and that could potentially be five in a row depending on how Thursday’s Europa League clash with Hapoel Be’er Sheva turns out.
Leicester City v Southampton Tips
Prediction: Leicester will score once, and only once
With three losses, two wins and a draw, Leicester’s defence of last season’s historic title hasn’t gotten off to the best start. The main reason for that is that they are scoring far fewer goals this term, averaging just 1.33 per match (way down of last season’s average of 1.79 per game).
This season’s goals scored figure is below the league average and the fact that Leicester are now coming up against a Southampton side that is averaging just one goal conceded per Premier League game (the fourth best in the whole division) should concern Claudio Ranieri.
At home, Leicester’s form hasn’t been so bad and they have scored in each of their past three home matches, but it hard to envisage them putting more than one past this impressive Southampton defence. That is why it makes sense to place money on a bet for the Foxes to score once, but no more than once. At odds of 13/8 for Leicester to score exactly one goal, this is certainly a tip worth considering.
Betting Tips: Whatever the final result, Leicester will be leading at half-time
It’s difficult to predict whether one goal would be enough for Leicester to earn all three points against Southampton. Only once this season have Southampton scored more than one goal in a Premier League match, so how many they score on Sunday may depend on just how tired their legs are after their Thursday night trip to Israel.
What is slightly easier to predict, though, is the half-time score. Going by Leicester’s past few matches, a bet on the 15/8 odds for the home side to be winning when the half-time whistle sounds makes a lot of sense.
In Leicester’s last four home matches in all competitions they have been leading at the interval, while Southampton have only had one half-time lead all season, but have been losing at the break twice.
The Saints may well come back in the second half of this one, but it looks like a good tip to back Leicester to at least win the first opening 45 minutes.
