Goodison Park is set to host the first Merseyside derby of the year on Monday with both sides heading into the clash off the back of crucial midweek victories. The hosts maintained their unbeaten run at home by ending Arsenal’s 14 match unbeaten streak on Tuesday evening. Everton were winless in their last 5 matches and their lack of self esteem was imminent in the first quarter of the game. Alexis Sanchez fired the visitors ahead by an Ashley Williams deflected free-kick. But the Toffees found their feet in the game eventually and started to threaten the opposition by utilizing the flanks. A Seamus Coleman equaliser was the prize waiting for Everton for their continuous pressing. Ashley Williams made amends for his deflection and headed in the winner late on to send Goodison Park wild on celebrations.
Liverpool overturned their recent setbacks and charged back in the title race with an imposing victory over Middlesbrough. Adam Lallana’s close range header gave Liverpool the advantage in an evenly contested first half before Boro were thrown overboard in the second half by an extension of Adam Lallana’s first half brilliance. The English midfielder continued to excel after the break as he put in a sublime for Divock Origi to tuck in before Origi returned the favor by providing a beautiful cross for Lallana to steer home. The win brought Liverpool back to the second place, six points from Premier League leaders Chelsea, which would be nine before the Monday night kick-off.
Simon Mignolet did well to keep a clean-sheet against Middlesbrough and expects a recall for the Everton match. The Belgian keeper was selected ahead of Loris Karius, who is under severe scrutiny for his recent goalkeeping errors. Divock Origi(knock) and Joel Matip(ankle) will face late fitness tests ahead of the game. Emre Can has also made remarkable progress in his recovery from a knee problem, but he will not be in contention for Monday.
Everton skipper Phil Jagielka will be suspended from the match for the red card he picked up in his side’s 2-1 win over Arsenal. Argentine fullback Ramiro Funes Mori might be the one stepping in for the captain.
A scoring stalemate is our prediction of the game.
